Jack Dodger learned early in life not to trust anyone but himself.  Sold by his mother when he was young, he thought that he had done something wrong. The first man that bought Jack was foul indeed and he ran away.  Saved by a man named Feagan, Feagan taught Jack how to steal without a sound and run like the wind.  Jack’s luck ran out the day he and his best friend were caught stealing.  Or did it change for the better?  Now an adult, Jack is in charge of his own destiny and the owner of one of the most notorious and successful gentlemen’s clubs in all of London. Women throw themselves at Jack Dodger’s feet but he feels nothing for them.  At least that is what he likes to remind himself especially after coming face to face with Olivia Stanford, the widowed Duchess of Lovingdon.

Olivia has no idea that the man she was married to kept as many secrets as he did.  Forced to keep house with Jack Dodger per her now deceased husband’s will, Olivia is biding her time until she remarries.  When that happens she will be free of Jack once and for all.  But why does the thought of that make her heart hurt?

Secrets of the past come to the forefront as Olivia and Jack’s relationship slowly changes. Jack is no longer the ogre Olivia first thought he was.  What each thought they wanted in life wasn’t really what they expected and what they least expected was to fall in love.

Lorraine Heath is one of my favorite historical romance authors.  Nobody can write an emotional and heart gripping tale like she can and BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE is such a novel.  Set in Victorian England, the main characters are the products of that time. Olivia, as a woman, is not allowed to be in charge of her own son while Jack, because of a twist of fate, was frowned upon for not being a man of the peerage.  Their passionate and often times secret embraces were beautifully written and I could feel the emotional ties building between the two.  Their battle of wills more than once caught me off guard and I loved watching them clash because I knew that in an instant the anger than each felt would more often than not turn to desire and if there was one thing Jack and Olivia felt, it was desire.

BETWEEN DEVIL AND DESIRE will stick with you in your heart long after you finish reading.  The characters, the pageantry of London society, and the love story all make for a worthy second installment of Ms. Heath’s Scoundrels of St. James series.  BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND DESIRE is a must read and it must be read as quickly as possible because you won’t want to put it down. I know I didn’t!
