Phoebe Lightheart will do almost anything to escape The Hand of God, a religious sect known for their subjugation and misuse of women, among other things.  Her ticket off the space station comes in the form of the BLACK STAR when it temporarily docks at Graves Station.  She just hopes she can hide out on board long enough to get away safely.

Not only is she discovered right away, but she is found by none other than the ship’s captain, Damon Singh.  He’ll permit her to stay on board for the time being – providing she earns her keep…

But no one every escapes The Hand of God.  And it won’t be long before they catch up to Phoebe and the BLACK STAR.

STOWAWAY is the second story in Marteeka Karland’s BLACK STAR series, a science fiction romance saga that manages to be sexy, fun and suspenseful all at the same time.  From the moment I read the first book in the series, PRINCESS, I was hooked.

The stories could be read as standalone stories, but I highly recommend reading them in series order, as there is an ongoing storyline that unravels a bit more in each release, and the full effect of that intrigue will be lost if read out of order.

STOWAWAY is the story of Phoebe and Damon.  We met Damon in the first story, and I freely admit being intrigued by this dynamic man, so I was happy to find him starring in the second book.  Damon is a man who wields his power with a temperate hand, never abusing his power.  Don’t get me wrong, temperate he may be but he never hesitates to act decisively when the well-being of his people is at risk.  He brings that same thoughtful approach to the way he handles the skittish Phoebe, although his libido rages nearly out of control whenever she is near.

Phoebe is absolutely wonderful – she can’t seem to hold her tongue with Damon, saying just about anything that enters her head.  Were she actually a member of his crew, she might border somewhat on insubordination, but as it happens that trait makes her an idea match for Damon.  He needs a woman who can stand up to him, challenge him when necessary, stirring his blood.
