He was her maker and her lover, but for the last century, vampires Diamonique has stayed far away from Cain Reed.  Once betrayed by the devastatingly handsome ancient vampire, she has more than learned her lesson.  Too bad her heart didn’t get the message her head did.

When Cain shows up in her territory determined to protect her from his enemies and win her back in the process, that traitorous heart threatens to overrule her head…

Anne Rainey never fails to create a plot and characters that I enjoy, something proven once again with her newest release, A DIAMOND AT MIDNIGHT, which is the first book in her BLOODLINES series.

Much speculation goes on about how much longer the vampire romance genre will last, and I have to say I don’t foresee myself tiring of it anytime soon.  There is something I find absolutely thrilling about a sexy and powerful vampire who has waited centuries for his soul mate before finding the woman who completes him and ends his loneliness forever.

That is a great way to describe the hero of A DIAMOND AT MIDNIGHT, but there is a little twist…  Cain found his true love a hundred years ago and completely screwed it up.  Apparently, ancient vampires are susceptible to the same failings that mortal men have.  LOL  Given a second chance with Diamonique, however, Cain will do whatever it takes to make it up to her.

Diamonique is understandably skittish, considering her past with Cain.  It is a testament to her capacity for forgiveness that she is willing to take him back.  Of course, we enjoy watching her make him work for it before she finally capitulates.  *grin*

My only disappointment with the story is its brevity.  I liked it so much that I would have welcomed more pages for this couple.  Due to its short length, there are places where the plot advances a little bit fast, but not at any real detriment to the story.  Should A DIAMOND AT MIDNIGHT ever be expanded, however, I will be most eager to read it.

For now, I am eagerly looking forward to the next story in Rainey’s BLOODLINES saga. With several intriguing secondary characters that promise for romance as scintillating and heartfelt as Cain and Diamonique’s, this is definitely a series to watch!
