A very bad date turns brutally violent. Beautiful and successful artist Celeste is anally raped by her date because she is on her period. The viciousness of the attack and its outcome set Celeste on a track of control and attempts to regain her sexuality on her terms. She is tired of crying and hiding and seeks a man she can control and be the one in charge. She finds a man that will play by her rules. But will he love her enough and stick with her through her sexual rediscovery and all that it entails.

I was not quite sure of what to make of THE RED PERIOD. The story is well written, I find Dalton to be a very good writer, it is the content that really pushes the boundaries with me. Celeste’s brutal anal rape, which occurred during and because of her period, pushes her mentally into this place where she is focused on her monthly period and her blood, thus the title of the book. She seeks and finds a man she can control during sex, and to bring herself back into the sexually active world she will only engage in sexual acts while on her period.

The psychology of all of this makes it believable in the extreme but the ick factor is just there and it is hard for me to get beyond. Though again I have found myself talking about this book with others not because I would recommend it but because of the extreme content. I have never read anything quite like this. Celeste’s fascination with her menstrual blood, to the point where she paints her body with it was just too much. Yet on a psychological level the writer makes it understandable. The man that she finds and controls is a yoga instructor that can perform oral sex on himself. I could never have imagined this until I read how it was done. Be prepared for the extreme, the psychology of dealing with rape, and the blood, if you decide to read this story.

I gave this story 3 bookmarks because I think Dalton is a good writer, but I personally don’t have the stomach for blood or the extreme female control over her lover.
